Event Details

The South Coast Fibre Muster is a two day event set up to promote and network the local spinning and weaving groups, as well as providing the public an opportunity to observe, and in many cases, be able to try their hand at the processes used to produce the fine articles and garments being showcased at the Fibre Muster.

Demonstrations will give visitors the opportunity to see artisans at work:

  • Fibre preparation on carding boards
  • Carding techniques Alpaca preparation
  • Drum carding of fibre
  • Spinning of wool, alpaca, silk, cotton
  • Drop spindle spinning
  • Navajho Plying
  • Weaving on a table loom
  • Wet felting
  • Weavit squares (small hand looms)
  • Children’s disc weaving (bracelets)

There will opportunities for people to try their hand at some of these activities.

Traders will be on site selling fibre, yarns for weaving, knitting, and crochet as well as the equipment used to spin, weave, knit, crochet and felt. These include looms, spinning wheels, knitting needles, crochet hooks, textile associated books. These traders are being brought together to give our South Coast Artisans a unique opportunity to purchase fibre art resources & equipment, that would otherwise be unavailable to them, only once every two years. Future artisans also have the opportunity to see, touch and be inspired by the beautiful fibres and yarns.

Groups from Wollongong Spinners and Weavers, Kiama Spinners, Weavers and Embroiderers, Sutherland Spinners and Weavers, Illawarra Feltmakers, Wool Road Spinners and Weavers, Nowra Spinners and Weavers, Yarnspinners Mittagong, Berry Spinners and Weavers will be represented here to show case their fine articles and garments created from the fibre and yarns available over these two exciting days.

A Competition is running at the Muster and is open to anyone wanting to participate. The theme is “Focus on Fibre” encouraging artisans to focus on fibre itself and the entrant can express their way of looking at fibre and how it works for them.

Entrants must create an artistic “Hand-Crafted Collage” with fibres and/or yarn eg: wall hanging, woven tapestry, macramé, felted piece.

Requirements:

  • Hand Crafted in any technique
  • Maximum size 600 mm x 900 mm
  • Will need to be able to be hung on a vertical screen.
  • One entry per person as an individual
  • One entry per group
  • Entries close at 10:30am on Sat 2nd July and entries must be collected by 3.00pm on Sun 3rd July (any entries not collected will be donated to charity

Visitors will be asked to vote for the “People’s Choice Award”.
