Surrounded by beautiful countryside accessible via quiet country lanes, Berry is a cyclist’s paradise. Making sure that cyclists are well catered for and looked after are Paul Traynor and Megan Scott of Berry Mountain Cycles.
The couple, who share a passion for fitness and the outdoors, met while snowboarding one northern winter and spent every northern winter for the next 13 years working in different ski resorts and indulging in this shared passion.
“Then one summer we were visiting the UK and a friend took us on a gentle cross country mountain biking ride around Yorkshire,” recalls Paul. “We were hungover but loved it and discovered something we could do in summer we loved just as much as snowboarding!”
When the couple moved to Australia they worked in outdoor education at Scott’s College in Kangaroo Valley. “We’d always thought there was something lacking in bike shops and felt we could do it differently by creating a shop that was warm and encouraging rather than elitist,” says Paul, “so in October 2009 we opened Berry Mountain Cycles. We’re all about the rider – it’s all about you and your experience on your bike. Our main focus is on accommodating people who want to get out and ride and we make sure the choices they make are perfect for them.”
Berry Mountain Cycles is the exclusive South Coast dealer for the US range of Specialized products. “They have the best products and the best support,” says Paul, “with a complete range from children’s bikes to racing bikes. They’re also sponsors of high level sport and have a team in the Tour de France. They’ve got a complete range of products based around feeling and comfort – it’s completely wholistic to make your bike specifically fit you.”
Earlier this year, Paul pitched the idea of a Tour de Berry to be held in June to coincide with the Tour de France as a celebration of cycling and French food and culture. The idea struck a chord and the inaugural Tour de Berry was a great success. “Everyone enjoyed it,” says Paul. “Everyone enjoyed getting out and about in winter on rides for all different levels. It’s all about Berry, enjoying our beautiful area and meeting people. People don’t realise when they visit that Berry is such a dynamic place, with an unforced and natural community spirit. We wanted people to stop and think ‘Look at this little place!’
“Berry is a beautiful place to ride a bike – you can feel so far away from everything in such a short time and the area has an inviting climate all year round.”
Berry Mountain Cycles also offer bike servicing and repair, bike hire by appointment, mechanic’s clinics, mountain bike skills clinics and coaching and weekly social rides.
