Be transported to Spain with a host of latin-inspired works including Boccherini’s Fandango, Canales’ String Quartet and Haydn’s Seven Last Words.
The Ensemble welcomes classical period guitarist Simon Martyn-Ellis as our special guest featuring in Boccherini’s Fandango Quintet. Although Italian, Boccherini’s years living in Spain inspired this fiery and exciting chamber work.
This program also includes Mozart’s famous Violin Sonata K. 304 in a rarely performed arrangement for violin, guitar and cello by the French guitarist Pierre Jean Porro, well-known in his day but now largely forgotten.
The String Quartet No. 3 in C minor by Manuel Canales, composer to the Spanish King, is a brilliant but little-known gem of the string quartet oeúvre that transports the listener to Spain.
Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 51 The Seven Last Words of Christ our Saviour on the Cross, commissioned in 1785 for the underground Cadiz cathedral, represents Haydn’s only connection to Spain. This powerful work was originally scored for full orchestra, and later arranged by him for string quartet.

Just prior to their Melbourne Festival debut, The Australian Haydn Ensemble returns to Berry to present a lovely program of String Quartets this October. Experience the energy as Steel City Strings presents its autumn program “Music from around the World”. The program includes American composer John Corigliano’s Voyage for String Orchestra and the rhythmic shoals of Venezuelan composer Aldemaro Romero’s Fuga con Pajarillo - guaranteed to get feet tapping. Be deeply moved by Dmitri Shostakovich’s brooding Chamber Symphony op. 110a, based on his String Quartet No. 8. The composer’s dedication 'In Remembrance of the Victims of Fascism and War' is reflective of his sombre mood at the time of writing.
Illawarra-based composer Judith Stubbs brings China into the program with her The Phoenix Suite, commissioned by the Chinese National Traditional Orchestra of Nanjing, written for erhu, cello and string orchestra. This dramatic four-movement work depicts the story of the mass destruction of the city and people of Nanjing in 1937 and its phoenix-like post-war rebirth. The erhu part, representing the phoenix, will be played on the violin by concertmaster Kyle Little; orchestra member Rita Woolhouse plays the solo cello part.
Come along for an afternoon of beautiful music and enjoy afternoon tea as well.
