Country Women’s Association of NSW, Berry Branch

Community Groups

The Berry Branch of the New South Wales Country Women’s Association is an integral part of the Wollondilly Group of CWA. This group includes branches from Jamberoo, the Southern Highlands to Milton – Ulladulla.

The first regular meeting of Berry CWA took place on the 16th May 1951.The CWA building was originally used as a public school in Pulman Street. When the present school was built the old school was moved to its present position and owned by the Berry Bowling Club; and now the Country Women’s Association of NSW, the home of the Berry Branch, is the proud owner of this heritage listed building in Victoria Street.

Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month commencing at 1pm. The meetings are interesting, and often special guests speak on a variety of interesting topics. Each year international interest is fostered and many unknown facts come to light as research is done on a particular country by every NSW branch. Natural resources, such as fibres, fruit, animals, and or birds form a section to be studied. Cookery, of course, form a major element in competitions, both in local and State categories, and Berry members are keen competitors with many prizes under their belts.

Fund raising is a big part of the CWA. Much local effort goes towards raising funds for support of such projects as Can Assist (The Jean Colvin Cancer Centre), and research into Crohn’s disease and diabetes.

The Branch is involved in the local community in such areas as Meals-on-Wheels, sandwich making for the Berry Show, catering for the Nowra Kennel Club, and hosting an International Day with Year 5 of Berry Primary School. Often there is a Street Stall for craft and edibles, to raise funds for either a local charity or another worthwhile cause.

Each Wednesday morning the Craft Group meet in our CWA rooms at 9am. This is the hub where crafty fingers stock the Street Stalls with a wide range of various crafts.

Friday mornings the Combined CWA Choir meet from 9am to 10:30am with their primary aim, apart from enjoyment of music, to entertain folk in the Nursing or Retirement Villages in the Shoalhaven and Illawarra district.
