The Rotary Club of Berry is again hosting the Australia Day Breakfast – and everyone is welcome at this FREE community event!

• Egg and bacon sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available FREE of charge, however a kind donation to Rotary’s community projects fund would be gratefully appreciated.
• Entertainment all morning, including gumboot throwing and other kids games.
• From 8am to 11am. Come for an enjoyable morning under the trees in the woodchop area of Berry Showground.ENTRY IS FREE

Nature Play is for kids who are eager to explore and push their limits (within reason). Suits 4- 14 years. There are no walls here for these kids to bounce off.

While we arrive each day with a flexible plan, we will be learning on the hop and flowing with the interest and energy of the children on the day. There’s acres of wilderness to explore, rocks to scramble, bushcraft skills to learn and practice, paddling in the creek.

Outdoor recreational activities might include:

• nature inspired art and craft
• sculpture
• baking bread on the campfire
• weaving
• learning knots
• stories or songs
• building shelters or rope swings
• whittling wood
• playing trail games
• observation walks
• paddling in rock pools
• identifying birds, plants and animals.

The program is from 9am – 4pm.

All food will be provided. Pack clothing to be outdoors and active, hat, water, enclosed shoes, swimwear, towel, personal medications, spare clothes, and spare enclosed shoes for the water activities.

‘bagan bariwariganyan: echoes of country’ is a body of works by renowned Gweagal/Wandiwandian storyteller and artist Aunty Julie Freeman, leading Walbunja/Ngarigo artist Aunty Cheryl Davison, and Wiradyuri/Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones.

Connected through new soundscapes designed for each gallery space, ‘bagan bariwariganyan: echoes of country’ sings the stories of this place, celebrating local traditions and the ongoing collaboration of these three artists and cultural leaders.

Collectively the three artists have created a major installation consisting of a large-scale architectural gunyah structure made from Bundanon’s turpentine trees. Suspended from the gunyah, are screen-printed skyscapes depicting the locally significant Glossy Black-cockatoo creation story of Cambewarra Mountain by Aunty Cheryl Davison. Embracing the gunyah, an epic 75-metre mural by Aunty Julie Freeman tracks the coastline from Sydney to Gippsland, and illustrates the significant bays, beaches, mountains and rivers that make up the South Coast cultural landscape that is Yuin country.

Included within this installation is the work of the significant nineteenth century Yuin artist Mickey of Ulladulla, connecting South Coast narratives from past to present, with works loaned from the National Library of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia and the State Library of NSW. The installation envelops audiences and speaks to Aboriginal ways of understanding place, encouraging audiences to reimagine the South Coast of NSW.

The season will also include Aunty Julie’s first solo exhibition featuring a major suite of new paintings and cultural objects, sharing grandmother stories of the plants, animals and weather patterns from the escarpments, mountains and waterways of her country. Aunty Cheryl presents an installation of new woven and textile works, building on her research into Burrawang palm seeds, one of the South Coast’s key traditional food sources.

This exhibition is open 2nd November 2024 – 9th February 2025. The Art Museum is open Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm during the exhibition season.

Berry ANZAC Day Commemorations include a March from Apex Park to the Memorial Park, via Queen and Alexandra St, commencing at approx.10:30am, followed by a service at Memorial Park, near the railway station.

All participants are requested to be ready by 10.15 am at the cnr of Prince Alfred and Queen St, near Apex Park, for the parade marshal, WO2 Alex Mearns, to call the marchers into position once the area has been secured and traffic control is in place. Those in uniform are requested to wear medals and families attending can also wear their kinfolk medals (on the right-hand side of a jacket or shirt).

The inclement weather plan is to utilise the Berry School of Arts.

If you wish to attend a Dawn Service the closest services are to be held at:

Shoalhaven Heads – Shoalhaven Heads Memorial Park just before 6am;
Bomaderry – Walsh Memorial Park, Meroo Street commencing at 5:45am;
Greenwell Point – assemble at Greenwell Point Memorial Hall at 5.10am and march off at 5.25am to ANZAC Park via Greenwell Point Road for service.

Art Workshops at Berry will host noted artist and experienced educator, Idris Murphy who will teach a 2 day workshop focusing on painting and sketching directly from nature.

Students will be exposed to a variety of ideas and approaches with informal discussion on composition, colour, mark-making, influences and spacial illusion. Students can paint in any medium. Small class size allows for individual attention, critique and developing your own style.

Idris’ work is held in the public collections of the Australian National Gallery, the National Library of Australia and the Art Gallery of NSW. He was winner of the ANZAC Prize 2015 and is highly experienced in teaching as a Senior Lecturer at the College of Fine Arts.

Using drawing materials and/or paints, develop your skills in capturing atmosphere, light and distance unique to working outdoors.

Known for his abstract paintings, artist Ross Laurie was born in 1961 in Walcha, located in the northern tablelands of NSW. Laurie studied at Sydney College of the Arts in 1982 and then travelled to London to continue his studies. He returned to Australia in Melbourne in 1985 to study and graduated from a painting course at the Victoria College Prahran in 1986. He returned to Walcha in 1990, where he currently lives and practices.
