Just off the highway in Alexandra Street, the Berry Bon Bon is a sweet little chocolate box of a shop packed with deliciously tempting treats for all ages.
While kids are well catered, this is also a sweets shop for grown ups, with everything from the finest Belgian chocolates to nostalgic favourites from back in the days when a bag of mixed lollies from the corner store after school set you back sixpence. Yes, all the old favourites are here, from pastel-toned musk sticks to melt-in-the-mouth caramel butters.
Owners Terri and John Andrews, who had previously owned Berry Jetz Café, took over the long-established business two years ago, having made the move from Sydney to Berry 12 years ago. “We often visited Berry for weekends away,” says Terri, “and bought a property with the intention of retiring here. Then we changed our mind and decided to move while we were younger so we could make friends in a new community more easily.”
Terri and John love the community feel of Berry. “If someone beeps you in the street it’s not road rage – they just want to know if you’re still coming to dinner on Friday night!” says Terri.
The colourful little store was refurbished last year with a modern red glass chandelier from Chicago as a stunning centrepiece. There are lollipops from small to gigantic, American candy, home-made Rocky Road, locally made fudge, fresh honey, jams made by a local schoolteacher, and chutneys made from locally grown produce.
“There’s also confectionary from New Zealand, British bon bons and Dutch liquorice,” says Terri. “We also have Nina’s handmade chocolates from Sydney, which are only stocked in a few select stores, and salted caramel and spiced caramel chocolates made in Currajong. Adults can come in and find lovely things for gifts, while the kids make a beeline for the Harry Potter jelly beans. We also have a stunning range of gift boxes that are ideal for weddings, parties, corporate events or other special occasions.”
