In this small group workshop with acclaimed figurative artist Alan Somerville, you will learn about using coil building hand modelling in clay – making it into a solid form to start and then cutting it in half and hollowing out and re-joining it with slip to create a small sculpture of your choice. You can work from photos of what you would like to create and you can also do a few simple sketches of what it will look like from all angles before you start.
Coilbuilding and handbuilding is an ancient technique that involves creating forms without a pottery wheel, using the hands, fingers, and simple tools to shape and make a sculptural piece. Skill Level – beginners through to advanced.
In this relaxing workshop you can work at your own pace as the instructor will give each student individual attention and assistance, to help them complete their piece by the end of the 2 days. Group size limited to 6-8 participants.
Alan Somerville is a figurative artist whose body of work is both broad and critically acclaimed. His numerous public works include the two iconic Bronze Diggers on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge, the Bull at World Square, Sir Henry Parkes in Centennial Park, Sir Roden Cutler, at Manly, and the three bronze sculptures at the Australian War Memorial, plus countless private commissions in Australia and abroad.
The weekend workshop is held on a stunning 9 acre property on Berry Mountain, showcasing breathtaking panoramic views of escarpments, green valleys and pastures of grazing cows.
