Reading Pictures, Are You Visually Literate?

Norman Rockwell: Great Artist or Mere Illustrator?

Illusions in Art and Illusions as Art

John Ericson is a former university lecturer who has developed a particular interest in presentation skills including the role of pictures in learning and the appropriate use of PowerPoint. His talks are well-illustrated and presented with warmth and humour.

In Reading Pictures: Are You Visually Literate? John will explain how we can improve our perception and appreciation of what we choose to look at. Is what we see what others see? Is what we see the way it is?

Then, find out about the storyteller with a brush, Norman Rockwell, the painter and illustrator whose work has probably been seen by a larger audience than any other artist in history! Very popular in America, Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations he created for the Saturday Evening Post. Today his work sells for millions and tells amazing and whimsical stories.

Lastly, in Illusions in Art and Illusions as Art John will explore how art is illusionistic by nature. M C Escher, Dali and Duchamp were old champs at the art of visual manipulation, but modern-day artists are digitally and traditionally creating cognitive illusions that force a double take.

Join us for these entertaining and highly informative lectures.
